May 8-10, 2019:  Iowa Memorial Union, Iowa City. Parenting for Liberation will participate in a 3-day workshop, parents of children with mental health conditions will conceive and create digital stories about navigating school struggles.


Chicana Motherwork Event Flyer For Social MediaTrina Greene Brown, Parenting for Liberation Founder and Executive Director, wrote a piece for the newly released Chicana Motherwork Anthology. This anthology is a call to action for justice. Contributions are both theoretical and epistemological, and they offer an understanding of motherwork through Chicana and Women of Color experiences.

Join Trina and six of her fellow contributors for a reading and discussion of the anthology on Friday April 12th from 11am-1pm at California State Dominguez Hill Loker Student Union Ballroom B. More details on the flyer.

Mama’s University offers a holistic approach to developing women leaders. Women do not lead single issue lives and in order to build an activist mother it requires addressing all of her relationship issues, including her relationship with herself, her family and most importantly, her relationship with power. February 17, 2019: Parenting for Liberation will host our first retreat and listening session for Black parents – Self-Care Sunday – on Sunday February 17, 2019 from 10am-4pm in Long Beach, CA. 

We see Self-Care Sunday as a retreat space for Black parents to connect with one another while sharing candid stories & experiences and engaging while partaking in self-care & healing practices. Through this gathering, we hope to hear from you about how Black parents are navigating systemic racism while simultaneously practicing liberation in their homes. In addition to getting some much-deserved self-care, your input will provide Parenting for Liberation with information that will inform our three-year strategic plan.

She spoke candidly about her experience with infertility (we gotta talk more about that). She spoke about the role of her mother (a strong black mother who quietly advocated and maneuvered things behind the scenes with grace and ease) and her father (who worked tirelessly while living with a disability and the role of her father in treating her to equal to her brothers which made her a strong woman).

Kids for Freedom & Justice is a space for kids of color to learn and share practices of liberation.


Screen Shot 2018-11-27 at 4.39.41 PM.pngNovember 8-9, 2018:  Parenting for Liberation attended Facing Race Conference attending sessions on decolonizing motherhood and wee the people engaging young children in social justice. This installation called “Stand for Me” by Saida Zahra of African American quilting which has a legacy in liberation. Our ancestors who were enslaved used quilts to send messages on pathways to freedom.

August 20, 2018: Each year Black Women for Wellness (BWW) hosts an annual conference to provide a space for Black and African American women to have open conversations and dialogue surrounding reproductive justice. Parenting for Liberation, attending a workshop on Parenting While Black.

August 9 & 10, 2018: Founder Trina Greene Brown participated in BEAM’s Black Mental Health & Healing Justice Training in Los Angeles, CA to increase her knowledge of mental health issues, myths and challenges in Black communities and gain new tools to support Black parents.

Conference description: In the age of “Black Lives Matter” and the openly racist anti-immigrant U.S. presidential administration, we must intentionally build healthy, resilient, and capable family units that can protect our youth from the impacts of institutional, interpersonal, and internalized racism.
