Habari Gani? Kujichagulia!

Today, on the second day of Kwanzaa we celebrate Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) which is to define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, & speak for ourselves. In Wakanda Forever, Queen Ramonda tells Shuri to remember who she is! Kujichagulia is an opportunity to get in touch with what makes us who we are.

Today’s reflection on Kujichagulia comes from our Workshop Facilitator, paradyse oakley.

“Show Them Who You Are?” is the question proposed by Queen Ramonda when Princess Shuri was grappling with the grief and the rage of losing her brother. Princess Shuri was reminded to look inward at their heart and show the people her true values deep down inside.

This moment reminds me of today’s Kwanzaa principle of Kujichagulia because of the call to remember and return to oneself true self. Today, I invite you to reflect on: What are some values and principles that you live by to make up “you”? How do you define yourself? What is your superpower?

For me, for example, I value community care and love at the core of my values.
I enjoy being in community with folxs and thinking about ways to have a liberated future.

As a family, I invite you to create an affirmation that will remind you and connect you to your power. You can also look to P4L’s Affirmation Card Deck for inspiration and grounding.
