2019 marks the 400th anniversary of the start of slave trade in West Africa. To commemorate the 400-year anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans to English North America in 1619, President Nana Akufo-Addo has encouraged descendants of Africans who were enslaved in the Americas to return to the country. As the survivors of the descendants, Ghana is calling Black people of the diaspora home, and our founding Executive Director is answering the call and heading to Ghana for 2019 Year of the Return.

Trina will be joining a group of Black women with SISTERcircle Noire on an Ocean Healing Retreat to get the healing medicine needed get inspired to turn things around for ourselves, our families, and communities.

While in Ghana, Trina is supporting a Day of Service at JoPat Success Academy, a primary school that provides a safe and caring environment, where support is tailored to meet the needs of the children. The outstanding educational programme allows children from challenging backgrounds to lead positive, confident and successful lives.

On November 25, Parenting for Liberation will partner with SISTERcircle for a  “Day-of-Service” to join with parents, teachers and students for a day of working the earth with our hands, working together, and planting roots that will grow and flower for many years to come. Shade and fruit trees and ornamental bushes around the school yard will provide shade, fruit, and beautiful flowers for the school community for many years to come.

Following the tree-planting, Parenting for Liberation is hosting a brunch with local parents. Together we will have an exchange and dialogue with local parents about Parenting Across the Diaspora, sharing stories about the similarities and differences around raising liberated Black children on the continent and in the US. Trina will share back her learnings via the podcast.
