During our discussion with Cecilia Caballero of Chicana M(other)work, we explore:
1. being a parent in academia and the organizing taking place on campuses throughout Los Angeles and Chicana M(other)work
2. anti-blackness in brown communities including personal experiences with colorism and internalized oppression
3. the victim blaming of local state-violence victim Jesse Romero (http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2016/08/10/boyle-heights-deadly-officer-involved-shooting/)
4. ideas for how to engage Brown communities for Black Power
Alonso’s statement to the police:
Talking with Alonsito about Jesse Romero, a 14 year old brown boy who was killed yesterday by police down the street from our home, and he asked me to write down his thoughts. He wants me to “send this to the police.” His first day of first grade is tomorrow.
“No more cops
We don’t need you
We need to talk to you
Stop arresting
Stop killing
Stop shooting
You need to apologize
Drop your weapons to the trash
Never kill people again
We need to destroy the police station
And make it something else, whatever we want
Like a space center, dinosaur center, science potions
They cannot keep their station
Police, never do that again.”
